Lancaster Medical Center & Medical Office Building, Penn State Health
As part of a $1B+ expansion initiative, Penn State Health (PSH) purchased a 28-acre greenfield site in Lancaster, Pennsylvania to construct a new community hospital.
This new 62,000 SF substance-use disorder treatment center includes the retrofit of an existing 59,000 SF, 3-story senior assisted living facility, as well as a 3,000 SF building addition to expand therapeutic and administrative office space. The additional 108 beds and expanded offerings support inpatient detoxification, behavioral health therapy, and medically managed care. As the owner’s representative, the PurePM team provided overall project budgeting, scheduling, design oversight, construction administration, pre-occupancy planning, DOH and BHA licensure support, and closeout services. PurePM worked closely with the CM and the architect through several pull plan sessions and incorporated lean principles into the design and construction process to support a phased occupancy approach with an aggressive schedule.
Interior renovations of the retrofitted facility required demolition and re-imagining of all shared spaces. The facility now benefits from new nurse stations, exam rooms, group therapy rooms, and several amenities such as a fitness center, a nourishment cafe, media rooms, and a staff refresh room. The principles of biophilic design were leveraged throughout the entire facility to create a warm, natural, and comforting environment ideal for reflection and recovery.
