Penn State Health

Hampden Medical Center

Budget: $301M

Size: 300,000 SF

Completion: Summer 2021

Architect: Cannon Design

Contractor: Barton Malow Alexander JV

Looking to expand their market share in the region, Penn State Health purchased a 44-acre site in Hampden, Pennsylvania to build a new hospital.  In association with Stantec, PurePM is providing project management/owner’s representation services for the design and construction of the new 300,000-square foot, 108-bed greenfield hospital.

The new hospital will house a full complement of services and departments including standard medical/surgical units, intensive care units, intermediate care, women’s services, surgery, catherization lab, diagnostic imaging, emergency department, and endoscopy.  Sustainability has been an objective for the project which the team is working collaboratively to achieve.

Speed to market is an important factor to Penn State Health.  Accordingly, the project has been fast-tracked so that construction started prior to final design completion.  In addition, the team implemented an off-site prefabrication strategy that saved both time and costs while improving quality control due to components being manufactured in a factory-like setting.

The end result will be a project that was designed and constructed in 24 months within original budget expectations without any sacrifice to workmanship or quality.
